Good Apple Info Snapshot:

Ashmead’s is a consistent award winner and customer favorite. An intensely flavored top tier apple. However, we haven’t had any of the trees thrive for us. It likely needs some level of spray program, or at least more attention. It’s a variety we plan to work with again.

Good Apple Info Difficulty Rating:

Medium. Has some susceptibility to Fireblight.
TRIPLOID ALERT: This variety needs two other varieties with an appropriate bloom time, for full pollenization.

Tree Habit:

upright-spreading habit. Thin for annual bearing.

Apple Color:

russeted honey-green skin that ripens to an orange blush under the russet.

Size:

medium.

Flavor:

subacid – dense, nutty flesh bursting with honeyed zing. The flavor is intense and complex, high in both sugar and acid. Best flavor around Christmas.

History:

An old English winter russet apple. The first Ashmead’s Kernel apple tree originated from a seed planted around 1700 by a Dr Thomas Ashmead in the gardens of what would later become Ashmeade House in Gloucester (U.K.). It never really received notice from outside the region, lingering for three centuries in obscurity before it was finally recognized by apple lovers around the world.

Storage:

Good, 3+ months.

Uses:

fresh eating, cider, baking. Prized by cider makers where it adds floral and tropical notes.
