History:
Black Twig is a seedling of Winesap that originated in northeast Tennessee in the early 1800s. The apple has a nutty texture and the resultant cider has spicy notes that make it unique. In recent studies at Virginia Tech, the Black Twig apple has shown to have relatively high tannin levels when compared to other American cider varieties. It became one of the popular dessert varieties in the 19th and early 20th century in Central Virginia orchards.
