Tree Habit:

Moderately vigorous. Precocious. Produces annual crops. Fruit tends to drop as soon as it is matures over a three week span.

Apple Color:

Red with blushes varying between crimson and purple; can range from bright red to a purple black. The flesh is white, sometimes stained red just under the skin.

Size:

Large to very large. Round, cylindrical with well-defined ribbing.

Flavor:

subacid –  Coarse, juicy and aromatic. Sweet-sharp.

September.

History:

1790 brought into the neighborhood of Detroit by early French settlers. Introduced into Ohio and western New York before the middle of the last century. Produced the famous McIntosh apple.

Planted by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello near Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1805

Storage:

Excellent, 3+ months.

Uses:

Fresh eating, sauce, drying, and cider.
