One of America’s original apples. Nothing impressive to report yet. Despite any setbacks throughout the season, it does seem determined.

Good Apple Info Difficulty Rating:

Hard. Disease resistance seems to vary wildly for this variety, some growers reporting high resistance, others reporting problems.
TRIPLOID ALERT: This variety needs two other varieties with an appropriate bloom time, for full pollenization.

Tree Habit:

High vigor, open-spreading tree. Tip bearing. Heavy bearer.

Apple Color:

Green-gold, and covered with a fine russet that thickens toward the stem..

Size:

large.

Flavor:

tart – flesh is hard, granular, and crunchy. Too tart for some when first ripe. Sweetens and mellows in storage.

History:

One of the oldest varieties native to America. It first grew on the farm of Ebenezer Davis in Roxbury, Massachusetts early in the 1600s. In the late 1700s, it was brought to Marietta, Ohio and sold by Putnam Nursery under the names Putnam Russet and Marietta Russet. It was also known as Shippens Russet in New York for a brief period, when it was cultivated by Chief Justice Shippen.

Storage:

Good 3 months.

Uses:

Fresh eating, cider, baking, storage, sauce. Excellent baker, and it is a favorite with cider makers.
